Dissolved organic nitrogen production and export by meridional overturning in the eastern subpolar North Atlantic ArchiMer

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is produced in the surface and exported towards the deep ocean, adding ∼2 PgC yr−1 to the global carbon export. Due to its central role in the Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC), the eastern subpolar North Atlantic (eSPNA) contributes largely to this export. Here we quantify the transport and budget of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in the eSPNA, in a box delimited by the OVIDE 2002 section and the Greenland‐Iceland‐Scotland sills. The MOC exports >15.9 TgN yr−1 of DON downwards and, contrary to the extended view that these are materials of subtropical origin, up to 33% of the vertical flux derives from a net local DON production of 7.1 ± 2.6 TgN yr−1. Long-term integrated biogeochemical budget driven by circulation in the eastern subpolar North Atlantic ArchiMer

The eastern subpolar North Atlantic (eSPNA) is a key region in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), playing an important role in biogeochemical cycles and climate regulation. Quantitative basin-scale biogeochemical budgets are still scarce despite the current need of establishing baselines of knowledge in a changing ocean. The physico-chemical data from the eight repetitions of the OVIDE section (2002-2016) are an unique opportunity to develop a novel evaluation of biogeochemical budgets in the eSPNA by combining robust and well established decadal mean mass transports with carbon variables, oxygen and inorganic nutrients in a full-depth inverse box model. Uncoupled transport of chlorofluorocarbons and anthropogenic carbon in the subpolar North Atlantic ArchiMer

Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) 11 and 12 transports across the transoceanic World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) A25 section in the subpolar North Atlantic are derived from an inverse model using hydrographic and ADCP data (Lherminier et al., 2007). CFC and anthropogenic carbon (C-ANT) advective transports contrary to expected are uncoupled: C-ANT is transported northeastwards (82 +/- 39 kmol s(-1)) mainly within the overturning circulation, while CFC-11 and CFC-12 are transported southwestwards (-24 +/- 4 and -11 +/- 2 mol s(-1), respectively) as part of the large-scale horizontal circulation.
